A fuel filter is the only part protecting the line between the tank and the injectors — or the carburettor. The job looks simple, but a wrongly chosen filter causes more trouble than it prevents: either it will not pass enough flow, or it will not stand the system’s pressure.
Carburettor or Injection?
This is the critical distinction in choosing a petrol filter, and it comes before dimensions. A carburettor fuel line runs at low pressure; an injection system runs many times higher. Fitting a filter built for low pressure to an injection system risks leaks and a burst body — in the engine bay that is a direct fire risk.
The filters in our catalogue carry this distinction: the one listed for the Doğan, SLX and Uno, for instance, is explicitly for injection systems. If you are not certain which system your vehicle has, state it before ordering.
Universal Filters Chosen by Dimension
Some in-line petrol filters are sold not against a single model but against a size — the Bosch-type bodies listed in our catalogue as universal belong to this group. Here the model name decides nothing; three dimensions decide everything: inlet/outlet spigot diameter, body diameter and length, and connection type (hose spigot or threaded).
In this group, a photo of the removed filter next to a ruler is more useful than the vehicle model.
Symptoms of a Clogged Filter
A blocked petrol filter usually announces itself like this: the engine stumbles uphill or under throttle, it is hard to start when hot, power falls away at speed, and the fuel pump runs louder than usual. The pump’s note changes because it is working harder to pull through a blocked filter — which is why a delayed filter change shortens the pump’s life too.
Flow Direction
Almost every petrol filter carries an arrow on its body showing the flow direction, and that arrow must point toward the engine. Fitted backwards, the filter uses its filtering surface from the wrong side, creates a pressure drop and clogs quickly. After fitting, pressurise the line and check the connections with a dry cloth.
The Filter Group at MTJ
The filter group in our catalogue consists of petrol fuel filters: Bosch-type universal bodies plus references for Fiat and Renault applications. For other filter types, send us your requirement and we will look into sourcing it and come back to you.
